EMERGENCE 2014 is a new platform aimed at showcasing Singapore upcoming Chinese choreographers and dancers, encouraging experimentation choreography of Chinese Dance in a black box setting.


Meet up with the young choreographers and dancers after the performance. They will share their behind-the-scene experiences with you. This post-performance dialogue will be conducted in Chinese.



This showcase featured five new dance works inspired by "Poetry":

Ruimin graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree in Dance. Majoring in Chinese Dance with a minor in Choreography, Ruimin was awarded the Chinese Dance Faculty Scholarship and the William Au Arts Education Scholarship during her studies. She is also the recipient of the Singapore National Arts Council Arts Scholarship (Overseas).


As a student, she gained a wealth of experience participating in productions such as “November Dances”, “Dance Repertory Concert”, “Dance/ Matters”, "Luminous", "Spirited!", etc., where she worked with talented choreographers such as Xing Liang, Liu Qi, Wu Kam Ming. Upon graduation, Ruimin subsequently performed with CIE. Ismael Ivo (DE/BR) Biblioteca Do Corpo "No Sacre" in Vienna and Brazil, and also participated in the "15th Anniversary of Handover of Hong Kong" and "The 4th Minorities Art Festival of China."



Choreographer and Dancer

Zu You started dance at the age of 13, training in classical Chinese and folk dance with the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Troupe (now known as SCDT), under the tutelage of Lim Moi Kim. He enrolled in LASALLE College of the Arts in 2007, starting his formal training in Ballet and Contemporary dance, graduating with a Diploma in Dance in 2010.


He has worked with many local choreographers such as Lim Moi Kim, Neo Jenny, Albert Tiong, Jeffrey Tan and Cheng Hsienfa.


Zu You is currently a student at Taipei National University of Arts (TNUA) pursuing a degree in dance. He recently performed in the school’s summer concert, dancing in “Epitaph- A Dance Inspired by Rachmaninoff”, a work choreographed by Zhang Xiao-Xiong.


Choreographer and Dancer

Zheng Long graduated from the Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art, majoring in Chinese dance. He has played major roles in "Yellow River", "男儿","谷灵生息","光芒芒" which received several awards in competitions. He also worked with Guan Yi Yi in "漠然的远离". Zheng Long danced in "东城决" at the tenth Tao Li Cup competition group dance category and was awarded the third prize. Upon graduation, he performed extensively in China before joining Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre in 2014.


Choreographer and Dancer 

Ma Yu obtained both her diploma in dance from Shanghai Academy of Dance School, China (2009) and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore (2012). Her dance training includes Ballet, Chinese Folk and Modern Dance.


Ma Yu has actively participated in several Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Dance annual showcase, "The Third Space Series". She had also participated in the Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD) Dance Competition, Singapore and was awarded "Honorable Mention Prize" for “La Bayadere” (2010) and "3rd Prize" with “Black Swan” (2011).


Choreographer and Dancer

Mingzhi obtained her degree in dance (first class honours) from LASALLE College of the Arts. She obtained Beijing Classical Chinese Dance teaching certificate for lower grades (2010) and a Diploma in Business Administration (2011).


Her early dance training was in Chinese Dance and Ballet, under the tutelage of Ng Siew Moy and Li Tao. At LASALLE, Mingzhi has received contemporary training. She received LASALLE Award for Academic Excellence (2013) and the LASALLE scholarship (2013).


She has worked with local and international choreographers such as Emilyn Claid, Marie Gabrielle, Foo Yun Ying and Albert Tiong. Mingzhi joined Re:Dance Theatre in 2012 and has performed actively with the company.
