Lim Moi Kim is the Founder, Artistic Director and Choreographer of the Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT), previously known as the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre. She was formerly a lecturer at LaSalle College of the Arts, Dance Faculty, as well as at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Dance Department. In May 2005 and May 2006, she was invited to be an external examiner for Chinese Classical and Ethnic Folk Dance Examination at NAFA.
She has been training in dance since 1970. In her never-ending pursuit for knowledge and excellence in dance, she has come under the tutelage of countless instructors in the field of Chinese Dance, Ballet, Modern Dance and Jazz in Singapore and abroad. In 1993, under the “Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts Sponsorship”, she further widened her horizon through educational trips to various cultural organizations in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shantou. In 1994, she received the “Talent Choreographer Award” from the Chinese Dance Artists Association.
Throughout her career, she has produced many commendable works that have left good impressions on critics and members of the public. In 2002, her work “Madam White Snake”, performed by The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Troupe at the Liverpool International Theatre Festival, won the “People’s Choice”, “Best Visual Presentation” and “Outstanding Supporting Actress” awards from the festival. Madam Lim has also choreographed many dance items for her schools that have won prestigious awards in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging of Dance. Two of her works “Glow of the Forest” and “Spirited Blossoming of the Plum Flowers”, received the Gold with Honours award at the 2005 SYF Central Judging of Dance, and were invited to be performed at the SYF Closing Ceremony, “Festival of Dance” in July 2005.
Apart from dance, Madam Lim is also a veteran Chinese Opera performer and instructor. She has played the leading actor in many performances and performed locally as well as overseas in countries like China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Spain, Thailand and Canada, where she is highly regarded for her outstanding performances.
Madam Lim has also roused interest in martial arts over the years. Her determination and perseverance in practising and promoting this arts garnered her the “World Famous Martial Arts Master Title of Honours” in June 2012. In the same year, she also achieved the “International Wushu San Shou Dao 7th degree Black belt Title of Honour”.
